"We Are The Temple" (1 Peter 2:2-10) // Pastor Daniel Mills

"In this New Testament time period, we enjoy the wonderful experience of Emmanuel being in us. We become the temple of God with the indwelling presence and power of the Spirit. This reality transforms how we view ourselves, live our lives, and engage our world. Our lives are likened to the temple's various elements: a place of sacrifice, cleansing, illumination, prayer, meditation of God's Word, and much more! This symbolism reflects the intimate relationship we now have with God because of the finished work of Jesus on Calvary. We have free and full access to God, eliminating any sacred/secular divide that was typical in the Old Testament temples. We are to be ambassadors of Christ carrying his presence, character, and mission with us wherever we go. We are called to a priesthood of all believers where each person has a powerful, significant, and important role in God's kingdom."

Our Bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 3:16 – Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

We Are…A Place of Sacrifice

Romans 12:1-2 – And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

We Are…A Place of Cleansing

Acts 22:16 – What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.

We Are…A Light in the Darkness

Matthew 5:14-16 – You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

We Are…Carriers of the Word of God

Matthew 4:4 – But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

We Are…A Sweet Savour of Prayer

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 – Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God.

We Carry…The Presence of God With Us

Matthew 28:20 – Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

We are Living Stones in God’s House

1 Peter 2:5 – And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.

Ephesians 2:20-22 – Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

John 10:27-28 – My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me.

We Have Free & Full Access to God

Hebrews 4:14-16 – So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

There is No Longer A Sacred/Secular Divide

John 2:19-20 – “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” “What!” they exclaimed.

Acts 2:46 – They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity.

Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

We Are A Priesthood Of All Believers

1 Peter 2:5 – And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

Colossians 3:23-24 – Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.

Exodus 28:1-2 – Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the people of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.
